Long O Donnell Associates is a people orientated organisation which is led and developed by our determined and professional management team.

The key to our continued success is a team consisting of a broad range of expert professionals all dedicated to ensuring that  we deliver our project services time after time to our diverse client base whether they are project based, senior management or part of the support team administering our business functions.

Our Mission

To provide key consultancy support to owners and operators in the Energy and Infrastructure Sectors.

From simple beginnings in the gas industry our portfolio now exceeds £25billion providing experts in engineering, commercial consultancy and management services for the successful completion of major national and international projects and programmes.

Our energy division offers specialist skills in areas such as utilities infrastructure, gas pipelines, tunnels, electrical transmission and distribution, water networks, waste to energy, carbon capture, fuel facilities, gas storage, wind farms and other renewable technology.

Our infrastructure division concentrates on road, rail, sea and air infrastructure with skills in airports, high speed rail links, road/rail projects, highways maintenance and port construction

This simple philosophy has brought us this far in our journey as a business and has served us well.

Long O Donnell Associates was formed in 1997 as a professional practice to provide commercial support within the utilities and pipeline industries and began operating throughout the UK subsequently expanding into Ireland and finally operating Worldwide.

Since our formation we have developed our organisation year on year expanding both our geographical coverage, client base and service offerings to provide an unrivalled service to our clients worldwide and giving them a level of security and performance unmatched elsewhere.

Our services now cover a broad range of comprehensive project engineering, management and delivery services to fulfil the variety of our client requirements from individual project schemes, complex projects and long term framework contracts. We set out our services to meet client requirements exactly and offer a tried and tested service based on many years’ experience of successful delivery in all areas.

Important Dates

  • 1997

    Long O Donnell Associates formed following the identification of an opportunity to offer the market a high class commercial and contract management service with particular skills within the utility and pipeline sectors.
    First commission undertaken for the PN Daly Limited utility framework contract.

     

  • 1998/99

    1998

    First significant infrastructure commission obtained providing commercial services for the expansion of Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport.

     

    1999

    First international project undertaken for oil rack fabrication contract management in Singapore
    Provision of contract services for the Millennium Dome, London
    First highway infrastructure commission received
    Major telecom commission secured for 2000km national telecommunications network

  • 2000/01

    2000

    First major overhead power scheme undertaken the Muir of Ord to Orchard Park overhead line refurbishment
    Established our pipeline project services division and undertook first major pipeline awarded in Hull.

     

    2001 

    Provision of contract management services upon large diameter 48” diameter cross country transmission pipeline
    First major substation refurbishment project undertaken

  • 2002/03

    2002

    Entered into first National Grid (Transco) contract for Quantity Surveying services in East Anglia.

     

    2003

    Entered into first National Grid (Transco) National Transmission contract for Quantity Surveying and Contract Management on £ multimillion engineering drawing update programme of work over 4 year duration
    Dispute resolution division established to undertake claims and adjudication services.

  • 2004/05

    2004 

    Entered into first Scotia Gas Network contract providing Quantity Surveying upon a 16” diameter cross country pipeline HSE and CDM division established.

     

    2005

    Undertook first major package of work for Bord Gais Eireann providing procurement, commercial and contractual services on natural gas networks throughout the Republic of Ireland
    Inspection Services Division established providing QA/QC services to the oil and gas industries.

     

  • 2006/07

    2006

    Relocation of Company Head Quarters to bespoke new offices in Northwich, Cheshire.
    Undertook first major commission for Wales and West Utilities.

     

    2007

    Provided Expert witness for National Grid as part of major claim settlement.
    Irish Division established and expansion of services provided throughout Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
    Awarded first major framework agreement with United Utilities for engineering and project management services.
    Entered industrial process industry providing professional services on a major bio fuels project.
    Signed first major commission for BP.

  • 2008

    Entered into power framework contract with EDF Energy including CDM services on portfolio of HV overhead lines, substation and transformer projects across Networks, Airports, Rail and Infrastructure.
    South African division established including commercial services on major multi product pipelines in excess of 900km in length in South Africa to deliver major infrastructure improvements.
    Established our Transportation division to concentrate on our services in the Roads and Highways, Rail and Light Rail, Air and Aviation, Ports and Maritime sectors.
    Appointed to Translink Northern Ireland framework for the provision of Safety Training Services.
    Appointed to Transport for London framework for the provision of Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering Services.
    Successfully completed major claim settlement in the Rail industry cementing our position in this transportation sector.
    First major sea pipeline project commenced with the crossing of the Solent Channel.

  • 2009/10

    2009

    Opening of Midlands offices in Northampton.
    Awarded National Grid Drawing Appraisal Contract (DAC) throughout UK responsible for administration and drawing appraisal service for all CAD files and engineering operational drawing updates on behalf of National Grid.
    Opening of Republic of Ireland offices in Dublin.
    Commenced major programme management scheme in Ireland to deliver gas to the West of Ireland.

     

    2010

    Completed project for the first 4th generation artificial football pitch in the UK for Egerton Youth Club and Egerton Football Club. In addition the facility has become the home to Macclesfield Town Football Club as their training facility, to generate much needed income for these important local charities.
    Entered into first water framework contract with Scottish Water.
    Awarded National Grid Project Services framework contract throughout UK including project management, contract management, H, S & E and Engineering services.
    Signed first framework with National Grid Carbon to support carbon capture projects.
    Awarded National Grid Engineering Drawing framework contract (EDC) throughout UK including major operational drawing update programme of works across Gas Terminals, Compressor Stations and Above Ground Installations (AGI).
    Identified Scotland offices in Livingston.
    Tom O’Donnell appointed to the Board of the RICS UK World Region Quantity Surveying and Construction Division with responsibility as Chairman of the Infrastructure sub group.

  • 2011/12

    2011

    Concluded our “Fit for the Future ” business transformation programme to ready ourselves for the next 10 years of business.

     

    2012

    Established our Renewable division to concentrate on our services in carbon capture, nuclear, on and off shore wind and other forms of renewable energy.
    Awarded National Grid Inspection Services framework contract throughout the UK covering vendor inspection, distribution, emergency response and transmission projects.
    Tom O Donnell is made a Fellow of the RICS in recognition of his services to Infrastructure within the RICS.
    Commenced work for Northern Gas Networks Technical Services Framework.
    Established our Governmental Services Division to concentrate our services at National, Regional and Local Governmental level.
    Secured our first Health Sector Frameworks for two regions of the Health Service Executive in Ireland.
    Secured our first Local Authority Framework with Dublin City Council in Ireland.
    Awarded our first Education Sector Framework for the the provision of Architectural and Engineering Services alongside Quantity Surveying and PSDP across the Whole Schools portfolio of the Department of Education and Skills.
    Awarded engineering auditing framework for a Regional Assembly in Ireland.

    2013

    Awarded our first nuclear framework for Dounreay Site Restoration Limited, providing Commercial Services.
    Awarded our first manufacturing framework for BMW providing professional services.
    Awarded our first Irish Water framework providing trainers, commercial support and technical field supervisors.

     

    2014

    Awarded the first Design and Install Framework providing E & I design and installation for Wales and West Utilities.
    Awarded the Engineering Consultancy Services Framework providing support to Gas Networks Ireland for both Ireland and the UK.
    Awarded the Design Framework for Electrical and Instrumentation to support Scotia Gas Networks.

  • 2015/16

    2015

    Mark Jackson, Director of Infrastructure, joined Long O Donnell, with responsibilities for the performance across the infrastructure side of the business.
    Mark is a chartered engineer, with over 20 years’ experience in flood and water resource engineering, canal restoration, waste management, evaluation analysis, as well as implementation of environmental, waste and flood defence projects and strategies, which has included, flood storage reservoirs, bypass channels, flood defence and EIA.

    Awarded our first major commission in the river sector providing commercial services on the environmental improvements to the River Dargle in County Wicklow, Ireland.

     

    2016

    Awarded our first major commissions in the rail industry providing Procurement Services and Mechanical and Electrical Services to Irish Rail in Ireland.
    Long O Donnell have secured the Transport for Greater Manchester Framework for the provision of professional services and the development of planned works.
    Long O Donnell have been appointed to the framework to provide planning and project control expertise across SSE’s programme of development and associated support activities.

  • 2017/18

    2017

    Awarded the Irish Water Metering Framework.
    Awarded the Crown Commercial Framework for Cost and Project Management Consultancy Services

     

    2018

    Awarded the Irish Water Legacy Projects Framework.
    Long O Donnell have been appointed to support Irish Water in the Cobh to Monkstown Estuary Pipeline Project.

  • 2019/20

    2019

    Eamonn Sweetman, Operations Director, joined Long O Donnell, becoming responsible for the performance of the operations of the business. Eamonn joined Long O Donnell’s Irish Office.
    Relocation of Long O Donnell’s Irish Office to Dublin.
    Award of the Southern Water Sourcing Executives Services Framework.

     

    2020

    Awarded the National Broadband Ireland Framework.
    Appointed to support Gas Networks Ireland on the Gas Design Services Framework.

  • 2021

    Awarded the A2 Gas Design Framework from National Grid.
    Appointed as Support Regulator to support CRU
    Awarded the Department of Work and Pensions Framework.
